(Daughters, Wives and a Mother)'를 관통하는 주제는 역시 '돈'과 긴밀히 얽혀 있다.

Familism and Women's Life, 'Daughters, Wives, and Mothers (娘・妻・母, Daughters, Wives and a Mother, 1960)
June 19, 2022
Aki, who is approaching her 60th birthday, has five children. It tells the story of the place where her family gathers, and the house her father left as a legacy. The mood changes when her youngest daughter Haruko finds a calculator. Haruko calculates how much money each member of her family will receive. We learned that a female spouse's share was 3/1 in Japanese civil law at that time. The theme running through Naruse Mikio's 1960 work 'Daughters, Wives and a Mother' is also closely intertwined with 'money'. Sons and daughters casually talk about inheritance in front of their mothers. Their mother, Ms. Aki has no expression on her face. Just she only looks at those children.
The family members of the movie are troubled by money-related problems. The eldest son invested in a factory run by his wife's uncle. The house was mortgaged without agreement of siblings. Her second daughter, Kaoru, wants to break away from her mother-in-law. But she has no money. Eldest daughter-in-law Kazuko (played by Hideko Takamine) is troubled by her uncle, who frequently comes to borrow his business funds. It's no wonder this family is interested in the million yen money eldest daughter Sanae (played by Hara Setsuko) has. Sanae, who lost her husband in her sudden accident, receives her husband's insurance money. Her older brother wants some investment. And her younger sister asks to borrow money to get an apartment.
This film is a well made family movie by Naruse Mikio. Aki's children in the movie are very selfish and cold-hearted, except for her eldest daughter Sanae. Yuichiro tells the other siblings that the house will be sold to the bank because of failure of investment. Then they can't give up their inheritance. So Yuichiro declared, "Then I can't take care of my mother. Shouldn't the duties be equally shared?" Generations after the war were inclined to material values amid economic prosperity. Tradition and individualistic values inevitably collide. The appearance of the family in 'Daughter, Wife, Mother' reflects the rapidly changing situation of Japanese society.
In some ways, this film looks more like a film about elderly woman. Kaoru's nagging mother-in-law was furious. Because her daughter-in-law declared that she would start a branch family. So she goes to a nursing home. The movie suggests the welfare problem of the elderly people. It was slowly emerging in Japanese society at the time. Kaoru's mother-in-law tells Ms. Aki, 'I'd rather die than live in a place like this'. Stingy mother-in-law also mentions that the place costs a lot of money. The poor senior person who is unable to receive the care of their children are very miserable. That problem becomes a agonizing concern for Ms. Aki.
Naruse Mikio continues his in-depth exploration of 'women's life' while portraying the rifts of generational conflict and familism. Times are changing, but women's lives are still tied to men. Sanae, who has become a widow, receives persistent demands for remarriage from her family. Women's social status is only achieved in the position of 'daughter, wife, and mother' within the family. She remarries a wealthy middle-aged man. Sanae gives up the young and attractive wooer to live with her mother. So the daughter bears her family's hardships. Meanwhile, her eldest daughter-in-law Kazuko feels sorry for the plight of her husband. Her decision to live with her mother-in-law is a will that she wants to fulfill her duties of family.
The women in the film are not free from the norms and bridles imposed by familism. Youngest daughter, Haruko, a new generation advocates individualism. She may be a woman standing on the verge of change. Haruko doesn't care much about her mother. She is relieved that her eldest sister's remarriage. Because that has solved the mother's problem. Sacrifice, consideration, duty... From these values, women of the same generation as Haruko would gradually tend to be a little.
At the end of the movie, Ms. Aki runs into an old man who pulls out a stroller. She thought that the child was his grandchild. But he took care of the neighbor's child to earn money. When she hears the child crying, she turns her steps towards her house. Then she soothes the child gently. It makes us guess the weight of her years as a mother. This mother, who was looking for a nursing home, has not yet to decide with whom she will live and where she will live. So the movie closes. Naruse Mikio elaborately portrays the changing times and women's lives in 'Daughter, Wife, and Mother'.
